A Touch of Zen

This screening of A Touch of Zen is part of our Curious about Wuxia? mini-season celebrating Wuxia, the genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists in ancient China.


Ku Shen Chai (Chun Shih), an unmotivated artist in his early 30s, still lives with his mother, but he is shaken from his comfortable rut by the arrival of beautiful and mysterious Yang Hui-ching (Feng Hsu), a princess on the run from Gen. Ou-Yang Nin (Tien Peng), who murdered her entire family. Yang brings Ku into her circle of protectors, including Nin's rival, Gen. Shih Wen-Chiao (Pai Ying), and the nameless monk (Roy Chiao) whose spiritual guidance transforms Ku into a valiant fighter.

In 19th century Qing Dynasty China, a warrior (Chow Yun-Fat) gives his sword, Green Destiny, to his lover (Michelle Yeoh) to deliver to safe keeping, but it is stolen, and the chase is on to find it. The search leads to the House of Yu where the story takes on a whole different level.

Film Night for Ukraine

Film Night for Ukraine presents eight of the winning short films made by young filmmakers (aged 13-18) shown at the International Children’s Film Festival, Kids Movie Fest, in Kiev, 2017-2021. The films are about the thoughts, fears, dreams and desires of Ukrainian teenagers.


Film Night for Ukraine will be introduced by Svitlana Pohasiy, director of Kids Movie Fest, who is now living in Hexham.


All proceeds from the night will go towards two residential film camps to be run in western Ukraine this summer. The film camps will be for children and young people orphaned and/or injured in the war. The students will be involved in a range of arts and cultural activities, developing their drama, music, camera and film editing skills. The camp will also offer the young people emotional support and respite from the traumas of the recent months.


Please note that the films are either without dialogue or with English subtitles.
