After years in the 12-step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous, James becomes a sponsor to newcomer Luka. The pair bond over black coffee, trade stories and build a fragile friendship out of their shared experiences. Kelly Reichardt (First Cow) reinvents the heist movie with none of the typical thrills or genre conventions you might expect, instead focusing in on a man come undone with the slow unraveling playing out with an unexpected humour. Rich in period detail and starring a hangdog Josh O’Connor, channeling his best inner Elliott Gould, The Mastermind is a sublime evocation of 70’s cinema and spirit and a cinematic joy from a master of craft.
