Synopsis

The Hard Road to Everest

Mountaineering talk by Doug Scott CBE

Doors open at 6pm with talk at 7pm

Scott first started rock climbing at the age of thirteen on the Black Rocks of Derbyshire. Money was short and as they grew older Scott and his friends hitch-hiked everywhere, bivvying out under overhanging rocks, in caves and sometimes in snow holes.

In 1975 Scott and Dougal Haston went on to become the first Britons to stand on the summit of Everest. Descending late they survived the highest bivouac ever, 100m below the summit, without sleeping bags, oxygen or frostbite.

Proceeds from ticket sales for this evening will be shared between Hexham Rotary Club Disaster Fund and Community Action Nepal’s Earthquake Reconstruction Fund www.canepal.org.uk

The evening will include an auction of signed framed mountaineering prints and sale of Nepalese goods and cards to support CAN
