Synopsis

Screening of Searching for Light (2014) followed by Q&A with local astronomer Gary Fildes, as part of Tyne Valley Film Festival

Searching for Light charts Gary Fildes journey from Sunderland’s building sites, through the darkest, driest desert on the planet, to the greatest scientific experiment ever attempted by mankind.

The documentary follows Gary on a journey of a lifetime as he travels through the Chilean Atacama Desert visiting the World’s largest observatories that sit under the darkest skies on Planet Earth. His ultimate goal is to understand the importance of dark skies and how best to preserve humanity’s window into the Cosmos so that he can protect the dark skies back in the UK.

Gary Fildes is a professional astronomer and founder of the Kielder Observatory in Northumberland. He is a man on a mission to inspire others to think about the Universe and mankind’s place therein, and to protect the dark skies of Northumberland for generations to come.

Tyne Valley Film Festival is a community programmed film festival consisting of 30 screenings across 14 unique venues in the Tyne Valley.
