'Coming Soon'

One of the important aspects of art is that it makes people look more intently at things they find perhaps too familiar to take proper notice of. Both Ann Sheppard and Lindsey Cooper have spent a lot of time ‘properly’ studying the things they make paintings and prints of. This gives them a deeper understanding of their subjects. It enables them to capture more than a casual drawing, painting or photograph would and allows them to interpret what they have seen in a variety of ways and using different media. Ann’s paintings of spring flowers and plants are not simply realistic reproductions, they result from her observation of how things feel, or the way in which, say a flower or branch is constructed, the effect that climate, season, age have upon it. Lindsey’s work demonstrates how the process of recording and creating something with different media conveys additional meaning to it. Her subject may be rendered in a way that is graphic and less nuanced, or illustrative and complex; the process to some degree determines the result. The artist is free to make that choice.

A selection of their work, with the title ‘Coming Soon’ heralds the approach of a fresh season in the cycle of nature, as well as a reminder that the exhibition is on display at the cinema, where there is always another event in the endless flow of cultural output.
